Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Since she was the only child Scott was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott was a graduate of her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. Between two work, she studied secondary education. She was hoping to become an high school English teacher. She had a dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, ended when she quit school. Her first job was as a spoken word artist, performing her own work in live poetry readings. She eventually linked up with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. The two ended up writing You Got Me together. The singer was initially spotted as an artiste at a Roots Show. After that, she was able to get collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. While on the Canada tour of The Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable performance experience.
